It depands on your area. Are Telewest/NTL in your area?
Since its a new house, the cost might be justified.
Ask BT if you can spread the cost over a few months of phone bills as you can't afford it all in one go.

Being a Contractor working for BT you will very rarely find any new build estate with any type of cable tv services as they are not prepared to spend/invest money on new estates.
So in a nut shell you are stuck with BT and £126 bill for a new line install.
And a peice of advice don't ask BT to check your extentions (which should have been wired up by the builder) as this will be another £70 + vat per socket!
Good Luck in your new home!

Only other alternative is cable, BT got the lines and no matter who you join, they will have to rent line from BT.. Not every area is covered by cable so you might be stuck with BT

You can check you yellow pages to see what other companies operate in your area. BT do offer you to spread the cost of the installation over 12 months if that helps.

There are many! You can try NTL, Bulldog, AOL Talk, even Sky can give you a phone line, it depends on your area. Try to check their websites.
