To visualize history, a large part of what you need is literally that: the visual images. Books can't make it seem real to you until you have a visual image with which to connect it.

Mel Gibson's The Patriot is a great example of this. He's creating a real flesh-and-blood image, with highly accurate costumes and props and sets, of a particularly important period in American history. It is not literally history in the sense of documentary or even unvarnished biography. But it gives you the visual images, so that when you read, you can see.

Of course, where a movie is specifically historical, you may have to do some research to discover any discrepancies with real facts. The easiest way to do that would be to research them on wikipedia, and see if you can find reviews of the movie written by historians. Whenever there is a historical movie reviewed, there will be some reference to the historical accuracy, and probably at least one critic referenced who cited flaws.

Same with any period of time, any culture: good movies have been made accurate to the period. Check around. Get some recommendations from DVD collectors. Heck, ask some more specific questions here!
