I'm sorry you and your son have to go through that, but the answer is yes, they can require a strip search. The rule is for saftey reasons (even the safety of your son) -- since it makes it harder for everyone else in the jail to get weapons, drugs, etc. I hope things get worked out for you!!

Yeah it is common practice and they say it is for security but really it should only be one ore the other - if the visit is closed then no search but if the visit is open then a search seems OK.
It's part of the way they do things and you get used to it once you've been there for a while.
Some people like Baz above don't believe that there is such a thing as innocent until proven guilty and treat people on the basis that if your in jail you must be guilty and that's not right.

This is common practice in jails and prisons. It is for the security of the building and the people working in it. You lose several freedoms when locked up in jail. Even if you have yet to be sentenced, found guilty, or even charged, if you are in a jail, you are subject to be searched at any time.

Unfortunately there are people who do things that they shouldn't and the only way to stop them is to use the extreem measures that your son is subjected to.
I know it doesn't seem fair but because of a few bad people everyone must pay the price.

wake up! he's in jail ! obviously your son isn't guilty of anything- he's just in jail vacationing. When you are in jail, you follow jail rules. I suggest that if jail is not to yours or his liking, best to avoid the behavior that got him there. Nice boys don't go to jail. Tell him to play nice.

This is routine in all prisons. You would be surprised the items that manage to get through, and he is a prisoner convicted or not.

Sure you have no right to privacy and being in lock-up pretty much labels him a criminal
