As an officer I love the X-26 Taser. It packs a punch. Except for a person on cocaine and cracked out of his mind, It has worked every time so far. I have even seen demonstrations where a $100.00 is placed in front of a person and told if you can pick it up its your. They never take the $100.00 home. Every time they are rendered useless.

Also the company will replace the cartridge, batteries, and even the gun if they have to as long as you file a police report. If someone breaks into you home, why wouldn't you file a report.

With the taser you can also keep your distance unlike the baton. If the baton gets taken away in a close up fight then your in big trouble. The taser has a range of 21 feet. If you miss you can still touch them with it and have the same effect as if you darted them.

There are lots of videos out there showing the tasers effectiveness. The best show a person getting hit with pepper spray and watching them fight on for minutes. Then the same person is hit with a taser and they drop like a sack of rocks.

Someone sugested a stun gun with 10,000 volts. The X-26 Taser is 50,000 vlots. Despite what anti taser activist are crying, the taser is still considered a less lethal option. It has not been proven to cause any deaths by itself. In the death related cases where the taser may have been at fault, there have always been other conditions such as heart problems or drugs in the persons system at the time of the tasing.

You're going to find both more and less effective options in the less than lethal class. A few things you need to remember, NONE of them are 100% reliable or even close. As an officer I have deployed almost every non-lethal and less than lethal device known and have on various occasions seen them all fail to slow down a suspect, much less stop them.

Each has it's strong and weak points. However, your best bet is to go with a tazer if it is legal in your area. With the tazer you at least have some range so that the attacker isn't right on top of you. Also, the tazer has a good track record for temporarily disabling aggressive persons. Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray is good but you risk letting the aggressor too close and risk being affected by the spray yourself.

In addition to the above, realize that someone has died from the application of every less than lethal force option available to date. So, you might want to be prepared for that. Oh, also remember that when you stop deploying the device, they might very well get up again.

Finally, if you're going to go the non-lethal/less than lethal route then by all means, you MUST work on your home. You need to set up a barrier in the home that will isolate you and your family from the aggressor giving you a defendable choke point. You want a solid-core door with a strong dead bolt, a reinforced doorjamb and have the door reinforced where the deadbolt is mounted. Also consider getting a good alarm system.

Good luck.

You could go the route of a collapsible baton, or a baseball bat. But if you're dealing with an armed intruder, you'll probably be dead. Your best bet would be a dog. Most intruders will avoid a house with a dog. In all honesty though, I would look into getting a gun. I own a few handguns and take them to the range once a week. I found I really enjoy target shooting so it's become a hobby, as well as affording me home protection.

An eight inch diameter cast iron skillet would work great...and can sit on your bedside table holding small items until if may be needed, then quickly dump the items and start swinging the skillet. Ask some of the 'old timers' who showed up at home drunk and the wife met them with a skillet. OR...buy a sturdy builder's claw hammer that fits well in your hands. You can strike out with either the claw side or the rounded head side...which will crack open a skull well, no doubt. You may want to take a few some Taekwondo lessons-- since this martial art works very well for women. Just a few, 6 or eight lessons, of instruction in moves that are geared specifically toward 'self defense'-- will help to make you feel more confident and safe in your home. Still, you must continue to practice the 'movements' until they become automatic reflex actions if you're ever attacked. Then continue to practice them for the rest of your life. You will forget them, if you don't practice regularly. Good luck...and I'm sorry that Canada has such stupid gun laws.

that can work, but it often times can take multiple hits and can be lethal which can run you some legal troubles. A taser or mase would probably be a more reliable bet, and you can never go wrong with an alarm system. Prevention is the best weapon of all.

Pepper spray bought at any Army-Navy surplus
and Police Supply store. Don't buy this spray
at a K-Mart, Wal-Mart or any retail store because it is weaker. A police Baton is good,
but you really need good training on how to use
it.

Dead bolts and an alarm system.
Instructions for your children about how to use the phone, and what to say to the operator on 911. Leave the phone off the hook after you call the police, so they can hear what is going on.
Along with that, a nice heavy baseball bat.

Lethal or otherwise, no weapon will defend you if you are not trained and fully prepared to use it effectively. If putting a pistol in your sock drawer makes you feel safe, you are deluding yourself. Your training, your situational awareness, and your diligence are your only true source of safety, whether you have a weapon or not. Avoidance of conflict is the best outcome.
