These are bad habits. However, some people are so accustomed to them that they did not even notice when they do so that they are not alone and many eyes are watching them.

Because it is unconscious behavior their subconscious is allowing them to carry out the action. This means that they do not truly believe their action is inappropriate for a public place. If they did, then a trigger would go off at some deeper level inhibiting the action from occurring.

These actions are subconsciously motivated and are displacement or comforting activities. Displacement activities cover for outbursts of behaviour that may be inappropriate or unhelpful, and comforting activities help to control stress in situations.

you forget yourself sometimes. i regularly get picked up by police for walking down my high street starkers as i'm to preoccupied with work and household matters to remember to get dressed. unfortunately the police fail to acknowledge this and have placed me on the sex offenders register.
