It's really not a choice between male or female. A spayed male is not as aggressive because he doesn't have the testosterone to full the aggressive or territorial behavior. And any trained dog (the 12 year old mostly) will respect, love, protect and obey the alpha.
So it's a matter of chose the breed not the sex.
Good Luck

I got a female pug when I was 10 years old. The breed is an amazing, well-tempered, very loyal breed. These animals are great no matter what size space you live in and they are very eager to please their owners. Spayed females are great and as someone said before they are less agressive than male dogs.

A fixed male, because males tend to get along with female people, and girl dogs tend to get along with male people.

A fixed female. Male dogs tend to be more aggressive even if they are fixed.
I think the Scottish terrier is a cute dog.

If they have only one dog I prefer males. Males are more loving and careful with children in my opinion because females get all edgy in their menstrual periods and ,if ever, during pregnancy. For kids, I recommend Shih Tzus (although their coat will be hard to manage) pugs, or a maltese. These dogs have excellent temperament around kids and adults when trained properly.

Hi there... I think that whether female or male is good. It's really up to your niece(I think?) to decide... Basically because that they are almost of the same character, and it doesn't matter much if you have a boy or girl. Hope I helped, good luck!

Whichever the sister prefers because she is the one who will be taking care of it and it will be living with her when the daughter goes off to college.
