I have a palpable mass in my left breast (9 o' clock). The mammogram & sonomammogram indicate the following: "...a 2.5x1.1x2.3 cm hypoechoic, smooth bordered parallel mass. It does contain a single cystic component." No one is sure what it is, but It may be a Phyllodes tumor or a fibroadenoma. The surgeon refered me for a Sonoguided Breast Biopsy (Core, FNA). Should I postpone the biopsy to do a breast MRI before? Does it help the doctor have a better view of the mass? Or should I just go ahead with the biopsy? I already performed basic labwork (CBC, CMP, PT, PTT) and I'm fine, but are there specific labwork that I should request?

I know that these are questions for my doctor, but after my visit I've been on the internet and have read a lot of diiferent info and it's kind of confusing at this moment.

A core biopsy is different than a FNA. If I were you, I would get a ultrasound guided core biopsy of the mass. A core biopsy will result in surgical grade tissue so that a pathologist can determine what kind of mass you have. FNAs are not as accurate. If you combine a core biopsy with ultrasound guidance, your diagnosis should be very accurate. Core biopsies are fairly simple, fairly inexpensive, result in very little recooperation time (usually back to normal activities the next day), no scar tissue (for asthetic purposes and scar tissue can complicate future mammograms) and highly accurate. For a core biopsy, all we require is a PT and PTT to ensure that your blood clots well. A MRI is just one more test, which is likely to still require you to have a biopsy. Remember, that until you have a tissue sample, you cannot be sure.....

i think you should proceed with the biopsy.. despite MRI being non-invasive, there are more advantages to performing a biopsy.. that way, the histology which is the exact composition of the mass, will be known.. the future treatment will likewise depend on what will be seen with the biopsied mass.. fibroadenoma and phyllodes tumor will only be speculations not unless you have the mass biopsied.. these wouldnt be confirmed by mri..

asking your doctor wouldnt cause any harm.. and discussing things with him shouldnt either.. he after all has lots of knowledge on the issue.. the basic tests that you performed are i think, for biopsy purposes.. they ask patients to have tests done so they'll know if the body can handle a biopsy since you may be under anesthesia (i.e. if the blood can clot well to prevent bleeding or if the kidneys are functioning properly or your lungs).. so you might still need to have a urine analysis and chest xray done (it all depends with your doctor).. further tests specific for the breast will be required after the biopsy.. like estrogen and progesterone thingies..

The doctor needs to have a better picture of the mass so he can see what has to be removed. The biopsy will tell him if it is cancer or not, so you should have both done. Depending on what those show will determine what operation you may need.
Good luck and good health.

u should listen to your doctor and go for the biopsy that would particularly tell the doctor what the mass really is, he gave u the tests to check for abnormalities in your blood content to check what caused this mass to form do tell him about your living habits and family history. Has anyone in your family ever had such a problem. hope for the best its not dangerious and just do what the doctor tells u dont go for others

Do not cancel the biopsy, let them "go in" and take that out of your breast. You can never be too cautious. Even with the fact that cancer does not run in your family, don't take any chances. Have that taken out as soon as possible. Stay safe, good luck. and God Bless.

Take your doctor's advice. If you have a question about the advice, bring it up. Otherwise seek a second opinion. In person, not over the internet. Good luck. And hurry up. You don't want to wait!!!

I have couple similar to yours. I did the MRI, and they said, they could see better than with the sonogram. I also went to a breast surgeon first for him to feel the lumps.
I did it in this order.
Obgyn
sonogram
breast surgeon
mri.
