i had the exact problem on mine. after various attempts to serch around the settings and the options coming off of each one i found that when the phone piece left my right hand and came into contact with a brick wall thus useing a huge amount of connetic energy it stopped. the only downside i found was that the batteries gave up, it splits in two and wont ring when i try to ring it.
keep an eye out for my name because later today i'm going to find out if my wifes motorola pebble will skim accross the north wales coast and still work when i want to phone a taxi home..
i can do science me.....

Go to your phone display options. What the flashing light is is a status light. You can elect to change the color or turn it off.
