The few places you might do this are over run, as might be expected. There are places like http://www.coroflot.com but as you can see it is a cast of thousands. While such things don't hurt, it is better to start with a small market and work your way up.
Churches and Malls frequently have "art fairs" that you can set up in easily. Bigger art fairs need increasing levels of professionalism so it is good to go see what people do there, but wait till both your work and display/selling techniques can compete before entering them.
Most fairs need entries months in advance, with good slides of your work and display, so work on being able to have that. Also when traveliing to different fairs , stop at all the art galleries and see if your stuff would go well there. having a flyer and portfolio is the thing there.
Also the art gallery owners go to the fairs as well, so just being there can be important.
All that is not great expense, but it is a lot of work, and there is not any substitute for that. If it were easy everyone would be doing it.

Yes , RunningChook, I can give you the best website for exposure. The link is below. I have been a member for only two months so far and have been chosen 'featured artist' and made the top ten list twice. I have had over 12000 hits on my art work. I have painted for forty-five years and never had so many people see my work. It is fantastic! These people can do so much for you , please check out my site and click to "Join".... you will not be sorry. feel free to leave comments on my work.

An artist can display work at no charge in libraries, coffee shops, card and gift shops, galleries, internet galleries, auctions, and at festivals and art fairs at cost for space. And as an artists displays in each of these places , he/she also displays promotional materials, contacts local newspapers for FREE announcements and sends out announcements to family, friends and media. There are ways for your art to reach a larger customer base...I am sure you are looking for paying clients and not just exposure. Try some of these suggestions and also you might benefit from reading "Making It As An Artist" by JoAnn DePolo, it talks about this topic of increasing your client base.

If I get you right, you want everything (fame, money, maybe love?) for nothing.
This is not the way it works.
If you want exposure you'll need to step forward. But first ask yourself: am I an artist, or some wally ?
