Is it possible for a dog to get fleas and/or tics in cold, snowy winter months?

I guess I am trying to find out if protection is necessary, or if paying the Vet. Cinic $14.00 a month is a waste during these months.

This is a top line flea and tic treatment which is placed on the dogs skin, just. Are others just as effective?

Thanks,

Noralyn

Yes it is a given! When your dog is outside remember there are also Rabbits, squirrels..etc that have been out there leaving those nasty little buggers for your dog to pick up.I have had this problem and have to use the products you spoke of.
I also make my dog homemade dog biscuits w/garlic in them which is a deterrent to Fleas.

It is possible that the dog get tics and fleas in the cold winter months. If a heated area that the dog occupies is still infested ---- then the dog can pick em up again. SO .... if you think the areas that your dog occupies can be free of these pests ..... you may be able to go about three months without the treatment. Depends on your area and the habitat.

It depends on how cold your winter months are. Unless it gets below freezing for several months, those fleas will still be around. They are difficult, at best, to get rid of.
Try treating your dog yourself, maybe it will be cheaper than having your vet do it.
Just buy some Frontline or whatever brand you want to use and put it on your dog once a month. Yes, most of those products are equally as effective.

Tics In Dogs

It depends. If you live in the far north where it stays well below freezing for months, ticks are out. I live in mid New York and if we get a warm day in Jan,Feb, I get ticks on me. Fleas generally come from other cats and dogs (mice if you've got a bunch) so it depends on if you have cats that go outside or if your dog gets much exposure to other pets. It s easier to give us the frontlne than deal with a flea infestation in your home!

Ticks are mostly active during the winter months:

"Ticks are generally found in wooded areas and tall grasses and are most active during the warm months. Peak tick seasons in our area are April through June, and September through November. Ticks can be active on any warm day, year round (a tick will bite and feed on a warm day in February). "

So if you live in an area with weather that varies between warmth and cold during winter months or it gets warm in the winter then it would be good to get the tick vaccination as well as tick control.

"In winter, larvae, pupae, adults and some or all eggs will be frozen and killed outdoors, but infestation problems may persist indoors. The "egg to egg" cycle, which can take as little as 3 weeks in the summer, may be delayed to 8 months or more with cooler temperatures and reduced humidity. Thus, during the cold months, flea infestations, outside, may be virtually eliminated, but households may continue with an infestation - apparent or inapparent.

In summer, especially late summer and early fall, the mild environmental conditions outdoors and indoors can result in the rapid development of heavy flea infestations. Starting with only 10 fleas, your pet and household could end up with some 90,000 flea eggs in 30 days. It is not uncommon for pet owners to leave their "clean" home for a few weeks (or months) and return to clouds of hopping, hungry fleas"

This is information provided by my vet's website, please click on the link for more information. Based on this information you can make a decision if you really want to purcahse flea/tick prevention and control or if you are willing to wait until the normal months.

I was at the vet just recently and spent money to buy flea/tick control because the weather flucuates here and the wildlife here ccomes arournd frequently and I rather be safe than sorry. Good luck.

Fleas are a major pest. There are various species of fleas - cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas and rabbit fleas.
You can get rid of them by the safest and cheapest methods like boric acid.
