United is part of Star Alliance so it's partnered more with British Midlands, SAS and Lufthansa in Europe. SN Brussels is linked to American/UK frequent flyer programme.

yes and no All airlines are competitors, but the also need each other to get passengers places they do not go to... LIke if united gets a passenger to london then sn gets them to brussels.... This is called code sharing...
