my son turned his portable dvd player to watch a film but there is no picture the sound is working it hasn't been dropped or anything like that because its been stored away
just wondered if this as happened to any one before and if there is anything i could do to make the picture come on

Check for some kind of magnetism or interference. I had the same problem when I moved, although it wasnt portable. There was sound but no picture on professional dvds only. The ones I burned on that player worked o.k. I dont know exactly what I did, but when I put it on the other side of the room, it worked fine. Unfortunately, after some months the vcr had no picture. I figured out that it was on top of the tv set which caused interference and ruined it. I hope that helps, but I doubt it.
