Make sure you know the dress code. Each airline has strict guidelines for buddy passes and there IS a dress code so make sure the employee who gave them to you goes over that. If they haven't, find out before you go.

Try not to travel on Friday or Sunday, those are the two busiest days and non-rev'ing can be impossible. Have the employee provide you with the number to the automated phone line so you can check your flight or give you online access to the travel net to check your flights and where you stand.

Be patient and remember you are space available. Dont bombard the gate agent if you dont clear, you will be rolled over to another flight. Make sure you use the buddy passes when you dont have to be somewhere the next day just incase you get stuck.

Try to only pack a carry on. If you dont clear and you are stuck over night, your bags will go to the destination. If you dont clear at all, they will be sent back.

Above all, remember you are a representation of the employee. Dont act out, get an attitude or get offended if you dont clear a flight or several flights. Agents can tend to treat buddy pass riders with a slight attitude if you act as if you are confirmed. Just remember space available. Dont leave the gate until they have completely closed the flight and are backing up the jet way or said that its closed. They can have some people not show up and just send you down the jet way to fill whatever seats are still open. So, be ready to go just in case, dont walk away because they will call your name once and if you arent there they go to the next person. If there are monitors in the gate area, watch them instead of asking the gate agent. If there are not, they will call your name, there is no need to check in at the desk unless you are instructed to.

If you havnt booked your trip, try to fly on a Saturday, those are actually some of the best days to fly depending on where you are going. Repost with the city you are trying to non-rev in to and I can give you specific advice for that city. If it is a highly popular or traveled city like Orlando, Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angelos or New York or a Ski Destination, be creative with connections if you have to, willing to fly to an alternate airport or understand you can get stuck for days at a time depending on when and where you are. Europe is not recommended in the spring and the month of August, people have been stuck there for weeks at a time. When I worked in Vegas, I had over 100 non-revs get stuck for 3 days. We finally got the last buddy pass out on the following Friday. So...keep in mind whats going on and be aware of your travel days and times.

The first flight has a high no-show factor, so shoot for that or the last flight of the night. Red-eyes are generally better but thats not always the case depending on where you are.

Again, I can give you better advice if you re-post with specifics like dates or city pairs. OR shoot me an e-mail and let me know the airline as well.

****Saturday is actually a good day to non-rev******

Make sure you know dress code rules and regulations for non revenue passengers. Fly out on earlier flights you'll have a better chance reaching you final destination in the same day. Best days to fly are Tuesday, Wensday, and Thursday and avoid flying out on a weekend or holiday you know will be a busy time for traveling.

Make sure you can allow for extra time. I have flown this way many times and for the most part it has gone real well. A lot depends on the time of year and where you are going as to weather you may have to wait for another flight. Only once did I have to wait overnight.

Avoid Monday mornings & Friday evenings - as that is when business travels (like myself) travel.

Keep in mind, when on standby, the airlines will take care of their "ELITE" travelers first, then full-fared travelers, then everybody else. Getting on the list early won't help you that much.
