A psychiatrist is the one that writes prescriptions for drugs to help your mental illness. So you would see him/her AFTER you see a psychologist which is the one that you talk to, evaluates you and refers you to a psychiatrist.

You see a psychiatrist if you experience one or more of the following often:
Thoughts of suicide
You hear voices inside your head
You hear voices that tell you to do things
You cut yourself to "feel pain"
Constant depression
Rage issues
Cry often
Have panic attacks
You've gotten rid of all your friends one way or another
You are a control freak beyond reason
You experience delusions or paranoia on a regular basis
You don't get along with anyone--at all--ever
You have thoughts of homicide or another crime
You physically abuse people around you
You physically abuse yourself
You are either TOO happy or TOO sad, never in between
You have "gone off" on complete stangers for no real reason
You feel you may be hyper-sexual (a nympho beyond reason)
You used to be a happy outgoing person but now you are anti-social and very inward and withdrawn.

OR:
You have experienced a horrible tragedy by anyone's opinion
AND:
Don't feel like getting out of the bed for nothing
Don't feel like going out of the house for nothing
Quit your job because you "can't handle it"

It is basically a brain malfunction that can only be corrected by prescription drugs--that's when you go to the psychiatrist--to get you back to "normal".

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

psychiatrists are doctors of the mind....

if your mind is not working properly you may need to see a psychiatrist...

however it is often the case that a psychologist can help you figure out if you need to see a psychiatrist...

not every voice in your head is a reason to see a doctor.... we all have that small wee voice of conscience that tells us what is right or wrong, we also have the voices of memories past... ie things your mum or dad or granny or grandad said to you that you hear plain as day at times when their sayings are appropriate.. add to that the very real possibility that their just might be a power greater than ourselves that just might be imparting information to us and that can make up an awful lot of voices in our heads that are not a sign of illness...

as for hallucinations... well there are things that we see that others don't.. because we see through the tints of our own experience... lie on your back on a cloudy day in a park with a friend and see what images there are in the clouds.. chances are you will see some things your friend wont and they will see things you wont.. it is our experiences that colour what we see.. and add to that the very real possibility that there is a spirit world and that some people sometimes see spirit beings... ie. angels, ghosts, whatever... and add again our own feelings... sit in a shadowy room with lots of objects in the room long enough when you are feeling alone frightened or vulnerable and your mind will create lots of images out of the shadows that you see...

so working out whether you need to see a psychiatrist or not is going to need some help... see a psychologist first... talk to them and ask them to help you decide if you need to see one...

best of luck..

you need to see a psychiatrist if you are: hearing voices, seeing things that are not there, {hallucinations} suffering from major depression, thinking of suicide self harm , have extreme mood swings, having thoughts that people are out to get you, [delusions] extreme anxiety, the psychiatrist will diagnose you, based on you symptoms you are suffering. moderate depression can be treated by a psychologist sometimes, but for the rest above mentioned it is best to see a psychiatrist, because these symptoms are an indication of a major mental illness
