if done correctly they shouldnt. however a flat edge "gumside" or an over long bar on the piercing can cause irritation to the gum.

They can. The positioning is a big part of it. If the piercing is in the middle it can cause more damage than one on the side because it rubs against more surface and can cause your gums to sink back after a while. The sides do less gum damage but tends to cause loosening in the tooth that it is resting against from all the moving around and rubbing by the gums. As everyone else that knows anything about lip piercings has said if it is done right and you use correct jewelry there is less of a chance that your gums and teeth will be damaged. Keep an eye on it and if you feel any pain in your mouth see your dentist. Pick your posion I guess (it's only a saying, not saying that lip piercings are bad). I mean they look cool but which would you rather deal with IF problems occur? Good luck!

regaurdless on what u get pierced theres always a chance of long term damage with your lip its mostly your teeth that will get damage i dout that your gums will unless ur getting a librat piercing
and to add a note on this thread thing most the people here are talking about a librate or other piercing a lip piercing is defined as a piercing that is done within 5mm of the flat part of your lip and if u would like to reduce any damage i would reckomend using a bar not a ring due to rings can cause more damage on the teeth

I have had my lip pierced for 6 years, and haven't had any adverse affects to my gums or the enamel on my teeth. Since having it pierced I have either worn a 'labret stud' with a flat back or a hoop.

They can do if not properly done, and if you don't wear the right jewellery. If you get your lip pierced and want a stud, make sure it has a flat plate on the inside that doesn't rub or hit against your teeth or gums - when you first get it done they will give you one that is too long to make up for the swelling, but they will ask you back to change it once the swelling has gone down, free of charge. Don't wear rings that are too large, and dont chew on the jewellery as this can chip your teeth.

The short answer, yes.
The longer one:
Anything that's rubbing against your gums repetitively is going to cause them to erode. The risk can be reduced by using certain types of jewellery but once there is recession, it is irreversible without surgery and it can happen quickly.
If you go to a good, reputable piercer who knows how to choice the correct jewellery and you keep an eye on your gums, you should be fine.

eventually yes they can cause damage and wear away gums, just make sure you have it done somewhere respectable and follow their instructions on how to keep it clean.

Over time it does.. it depends on how much you play with it and what kind of jewelry you use alsoo.. I asked my piercer about it.. she said that it takes so long I'd probably be bored of it by then..
