I for one don't believe in the bible. I think it's a great book and changes the lives of many for the better. I think religon as a whole is mans interpretation of the unexplainable. But today I saw something on T.V. that makes me think twice. Its called
THE BIBLE CODE. People claim Many historic events have been decoded in the bible written in grids in close proximity in the ancient hebrew text. For example. Hitler-Evil Man-Slaughter -- Airplanes-Wright Brothers
Shakesphere-Makbeth-Hamlet -- Einstein-will the change the way we look at things -- 911-twin towers-thousands will die-airplanes.
(It even refrences itself)Bilbe code-will be decoded by computer Etc...Etc...Etc
As a non believer I found this somewhat chilling to say the least. There's even dates associated with events. How real is this. If this is mathematically impossible is it fair to say the Bible has been scientifically proven?

The bible code is a bit silly. It's about as mystical as having a computer randomly spit out letters, then being surprised when your name shows up on page 315, which happens to be the first 3 digits of your best friend's phone number.

what happened is that they had a computer search every 2 letters, then every 3, then every 4, then every 5 arrange them in different shaped patterns then had a computer look for words and names.

A famous researcher ran the same type of program with moby dick, and got similar results.

quite simply, when you take a list of letters, and have a computer arrange them a million different ways, sooner or later, you'll get them to say darned near anything.

The so called mystical properties of mathematics has been explored for more than 2000 years. Philo an early Jewish theologian(around 10 ad) thought numbers may be divine. Many people from that period thought maths to be divine somewhat because of its perceived predictability properties.
Of course the people that really know maths understand that it is a MAN MADE language. Sure it is still deeply interesting. Maths will always be used to try and convince people of truths. And the bible code is no different. Mathematical logarithms to try and prove prophecy is just another example of peoples attempt to prove Christianity to be 'scientifically' accurate. The book of revelation and its numerology is an earlier attempt at this, and it still convinces people today. Treating the bible like its some divine magic holy book with special powers, is nothing new. This bible code has been done before long ago. The methods used in the "Bible Code" can be used any other large books and extract similiar informtion. Most of the words in this reply are all made up from just 26 letters. Is it a miracle? Its simply Order. Larger the book more chances of detecting a sequence that will spell something interesting

The Bible was written over a period of at least 2800 years by dozens of different authors through time. Proving the Bible scientifically would be like collecting the diaries of 75 women and trying to prove them.

(What is there to prove? People wrote down what they saw.)

The thing about Bible codes is complete nonsense. People seem to need conspiracy theories to believe in, but the original writers of the Bible spoke a number of different languages and could never have conceived a code. If they did, how could they all meet? The first writer probably died before 2500 BC and the last writer died about 100 AD? It's not like they could all get together at the local Starbucks!

Historically, most of the events can be proven either as accurate or in an accurate context. Hundreds of details can be spcifically corroborated by outside sources.

A) The previous answerers were correct in that you can make the Bible say anything you want if you fiddle with it enough. The "Bible Code' is bovine end product, suitable for fertilizing Iowa cornfields and that's about all.

B) The archaeology of the Bible is very accurate. We know where most of the sites are, we've excavated a number of them.
C) The sociology of the Bible is correct. Again, through the course of excavations and findings of other writings from those eras we know that the customs and rituals described in the Bible are accurately described.
D) The historical accuracy is less certain, particularly as it pertains to the Book of Genesis. After that, it's accurate.
E) Anyone who looks to Scripture for accuracy in the sciences of geology, astronomy, meteorology, chemistry, physics, or biology is in sore need of help, for they will not find those sciences in Scripture. The Bible was written by men of faith, and they couldn't have cared less about the "hows". They were solely interested in the "whys" and the "Who".

Hope this helped.

They were able to get the same results using the book Moby Dick, so it's hardly proof to me...

some of the locations in the Bible were real places, but then there have been a lot of fiction books written that take place in New York, too...

Yes, it has. The Bible has been scientifically proven to exist. There is no doubt in that.

(Of course, its contents are a mostly superstitious nonsense mixed with a few historical references.)

The Bible Code is complete nonsense. You can pick out strings like that from any large book. It's even been done on the Bible Code book, itself.

Thou needest not the Bible, my child, for I, the King of Israel, am here to look after thee and thy brothers and sisters in humanity, to rule the world from the City of Jerusalem, to bring good things to Jew and Gentile alike, and to await the Messiah, who ariseth in Me.

Verily Aaron Zachariah hath spoken.
