2 months ago our dogs got into rat poisoning over at some friends home. Once we noticed this, which was within 1 hour,we took them right into the vet. They vet indouced vomiting and They where put on Vitamine K pills, for 1 week each and then re tested to see if thier blood had coagulated, but no, the test came back bad, so once again they where put on Vit. K. after another 2 weeks of being on Vit K, they where retested again, still thier blood work came back bad, so a 3rd time they went on it, and again thier blood work came back bad. Now our Vet doesn't know what to do! Our dogs are 2 Chuahuaia's under 4 pounds and 1 Whippit 28 pounds. Does anyone have any other ideas?? I was told yesterday by a friend to give our dogs a little cooked liver to help build up thier iron levels and maybe that would help them. Please can anyone else suguest anything?? I'm HELPLESS!!!

Liver will raise the levels some. I heard of a case like this before. Contact the University of Illinois- School of Veterinary Medicine, I believe it was thier case.
Good Luck, you may also want to try another vet, for a second opinion, for treatment options.

Rat poison prevents the blot form clotting and is actually use in heart patients to keep the blood thin to prevent further heart problems. I don't have a medical background so I am not sure how it prevents the blood clotting. If the poison kills off platelets in the blood then over time they should build up as new ones are generated by the body but if the poison has somehow stayed on the system as heavy metals do then perhaps there is an ongoing effect. Personally I would be tempted to give them salty foods to get them to drink a lot and hope that all of the water will help to flush out any residual chemicals that may still be in their system. Perhaps you should contact the manufacturer and ask if they can provide some info about the chemicals in the product and what physical effect they might have so that you ca pass the info on to the vet as there may be more than one nasty causing the problem. As a last resort perhaps a doggie blood transfusion (exchange) this will ease the immediate clotting problem and drawing off some blood may help eliminate some unseen nasties.
Perhaps try a vet from another area as even with doctors sometimes a second doctor spots something the other missed, or even ask a medical practitioner what do you recommend is someone has taken too much of their anticoagulant medication and see what they suggest.
Sorry couldn't be of more help.

You need to get to another vet. They need more testing than just coag times. I would try the liver and keep them on Vitamin K. You can also ask your vet about blood transfusions with these dogs. I'm not saying that will work, but it is worth a try. A groomer I know, called me from her vet clinic to ask if she could use my one donor dog as her small dog had been in the clinic for 2 months and not doing better. It was a last ditch effort with her dog, but the transfusion helped it.

I have been thinking about this more and more. Rat poison should not have any effects after 3 weeks after ingestion. Are you sure that these dogs are not getting back in to the poison? Also, what breed of dogs are these? Are they related? Have you had them tested for bleeding disorders like von Willebrands and Hemophelia? I would have more testing done, and also make sure there is no more poison around they could be getting into.

I suggest going to another vet. The one you have now should have some better solutions than just the vitamin K. You can try liver, but make sure you don't OD on the iron, which can also be unhealthy.

They have lived 2 months, so I would be optimistic. Sounds like whatever you are doing is prolonging their lives in some way or another.

Good luck with everything..!

Find foods high in vit. K and feed them those. The vit. K will help but they need ALOT of it. Again do a search for foods with a high amount. I would also seed an alternative vet, sounds like yours just "dropped the ball" A concerned vet would research further and try to do more. Good Luck

All I know is to keep giving them the vitamin K and perhaps liver. I'm so sorry that your dogs are suffering. If they have lived 2 months now they just might make it. Don't give up hope.
