Recruiters are punished for out right lying. I recruited for years and never lied once. I always let potential recruits know to do theri own research, ask other military members, read contracts, ask questions. Some recruiters do outright lie, and those are the ones that give us bad names. Usually it is the Army recruiters that mislead folks with tales of going to college alot whil serving, promises of jobs or assignments that cant be met. Only the national Guard can promise assignments because of they way they fill positions, instead of just getting bodies like the Army does.
Remember, it is sales in a way, Recruitersare taught to find the need and fill it. If I found my recruiters that worked for me lying or misleading, they had to correct it asap or find themselves with a USMJ (legal ) action. I didnt care about a number, I cared about the soldier. There are plenty of recruiters out there like that.

Do you think that they want to go to Iraq, they have quotas that they must meet, and they will tell you anything to get you to sign except how bad it really is in Iraq. Did you ever hear of the No Child Left Behind Law, the one President Bush passed. There is a part in that law that allows recruiters for the military to gather information of each and every junior and senior in high schools, like their name, address, telephone number, and various other information and they use this to pounce on them and there have been cases of harrassement and other crimes committed. One can opt out it is in the rule book from the school but it is well hidden so that it will not be found to take this away from recruiters.

The recruiting sergeant of old would loiter near any hostelry selling alcohol. He would engage any young male 'in his cups' - drunk, in conversation. Slyly he would slip a shilling - the Queens Shilling - into the young man's mug or tankard. The young man would be deemed to have accepted The Queens Shilling - signed up for the Army. It was one step better than the Press Gang. Nowadays the Army are targetting secondary Schools in areas of high unemployment as a means of recruiting young men and woman to the colours. The Army is an exciting, challenging and rewarding career for the right person.

The usual routine, see the world ,learn a trade ,make lifelong friends, wear a uniform that gets the girls.
Strangely, its probably not far from the truth.
Although probably not as glamorous.
You may well end up stacking blankets in the stores somewhere in germany.Your army trade couldnt get you work in tesco.Your lifelong friends will end up drunks and cranks like most ex squaddies. The girls only really want officers.
However,if you want to serve your country.Have the unquestionable right to be proud and be respected. Then you wont need the bull of a recruiting sergeant to tempt you in.

Whatever it takes to get the job done.
Like they said, used car salesmen, recruiters all the same.
My friend was a recruiter and he finally left the military, he told me "man, I'm tired of lying to people to get them to join the military."

You people make me effin sick. Truly, i am becoming disgusted by you people, talking so much trash on the military. Just because you don't like what is going on in iraq and afghanistan, doesnt mean you can take it out on those serving in the military. If you had the balls to stand up for your country and serve, i would consider you worthy of being american citizens. To those of you who answered in defense of the military, thank you. To the rest, leave the country or enjoy the great freedoms other countries provide for their citizens.

In all seriousness the same sales tecniques used by car salesmen or any other type of salesmen. They don't really lie, but they certainly do bend the truth and make everything sound a lot better then it really is.
They have quotas just like salesmen.

Once they make you feel like their friend....then is there no turning back except you are smart like me. Its like car sales men, once they succeed in making you their friend, you end up paying too much for the car. If you were told the usa army is an army of two instead of one...will you join? or lets say you will be responsible for your tuition will you accept? I dont think so....
its business men, there is no lying ...its the just the truth twisted.
