can you tell me why?

Canon told us that one is better than the other by giving it a higher number.

The A540 is 6 MP and the A530 is "only" 5 MP.
The A540 offers aperture priority and shutter priority modes and the A530 does not. (The A530 has a manual mode, though, so you can control these settings if you wish.)
The A540 has a bigger and sharper LCD monitor than the A530.

Read Steve's review for each camera, as he compares them back and forth in each review.

Main differences are mega pixels and LCD in the back.
Everything else is the same, including the lens. They are excellent values for point and shoot cameras. Here is a link for specifications;
