Yes, its called personal space-and human relations are governed by it- the amount of personal space required by a person depends on upbringing, attitude and how aggressive they are.
People brought up in a packed, crowded city tend to have less of a requirement for distance from them when they're in a conversation(since they've always been living in crowded cramped spaces), farmers, or people who've lived in rural areas feel most comfortable with just a wave(as their private space is much larger, due to the open spaces they're used to).
If you have a recording of you in a conversation with this guy, and you dont like him in your face- you will notice it's almost like a waltz- he'll step up to talk to you(since he feels that's the nice thing to do), and you, feeling the intrusion will step back-----watch this over and over again, and it's like this guys is almost houding you down.
it's the key to all healthy relationships---give a person you're talking to, the space they need.

We need personal space because we don't want to get spat on or breathed on that closely, and we like to see each other as a whole and not just the tip of their nose :) Some people don't seem to understand that but fortunately most do!

Unless you're being intimate or very private, there is a certian boundry of space that should be observed. People have a personal space bubble and it's uncomfortable when people get to close.

Well it is rude to get right into someones face to talk to them, that's invading their space. Only Drill Sergeants should do this, "NOW DROP AND GIVE ME 20 MAGGOT!"
Woops sorry about that had a flash back to my boot camp days. But you do get the point right?

Most of us like out personal space. It can actually be quite distressing if you are talking to somebody who needs to invade your space for whatever reason, you find yourself backing off and they keep creeping closer, and it's not like you can even say to them, "hey back off!" without appearing rude.
My husband and I have just finished a property development in a town near us and the neighbour of that house was very much in your face when he talked. He is also fat and spat a lot, he looks like Jabba the Hut but without the charisma, his mother's deaf so he shouts a lot and to cap it all he refuses to speak anything other than Valenciano and my spanish is limited to fairly basic Castilliano. Eventually I refused to speak to him at all it was so unpleasant and unproductive. I'm very glad we've sold that house now.
