I've got 2 boys (nearly 5 and 2 + a half) and I'd like to put them in bunk beds but I have my reservations ....

Like the big one forgetting he's in a bunk bed and falling down the ladder, the small one trying to climb to the top bunk, not getting to the loo on time etc...

When have other Mums put their children in bunk beds?

I put my two girls into bunks at exactly this age! We got a set where the top one has a safety bar all the way around. They can also be used as two single beds if required. My youngest has always slept in the bottom and has never complained that she can't be on the top (she's now 4). We told her right from the start that her bed was the bottom one and she's just accepted it.

I always make them go to the toilet before bed and leave a hall light on all night in case they need to get up & can see - but we've always done these things anyway. They've never forgotten that they're in a bunk bed, this has never been an issue. They love it.

We had a rule right from the start that there was to be NO playing on the beds. Of course, at the start it was such a novelty that they couldn't help themselves so they'd get up the ladder whenever we weren't looking. I gave them two warnings and on the third occasion they were caught, the beds came down and they had to sleep in two single beds for a month. (it was a pain in the bum for us, but it was successful) We then put them back up again - and haven't had a problem since. Even when they have friends come over you can hear them say to their friends, "Get off the ladder - we're not allowed up there!"

Most people say 6 or 7 years old, but I think as long as there are some rules and a safety bar, they'll be fine. My kids are. They play on the monkeybars at school that are higher than a bunk bed don't they? I also find that they don't chat as much before they go to sleep as they're not looking at each other.

You should put the oldest child on the top. This is a good age. Put a siderail on both of the beds so neither one will fall off. Thell your 2 year old that he cannot climb up to the top bunk without you in the room.

I'd be way too scared to put my 2 older boys in bunk beds. Whats to say they wont be dillusional in the middle of the night and fall out? Way too dangerous!! I have a brother who is a quadraplegic due to breaking his neck, in an accident, so I'd say that influences my opinions a bit, but if I can avoid my boys injuring themselves (and I see bunk beds being a great potential for this) then I'll avoid it. Sleepy kids and heights don't mix!!!
