Spurs can be caused when the fascial skin of the bone (called periosteum) is pulled off (not completely). The body sends in specialized cells to produce more bone to fill the sack. Repeated occurances cause a horn of new bone, called a spur.

Spurs can also come fom bone-on-bone friction in an arthritic joint. The friction, again causes the body to produce more bone. repeated occurances cause the spur to grow.

The most common places are in the neck or on the heel of the foot.
