Because the young man has not been taught how to respect women and probably has a personality disorder from the lack of caring in his life. Rape is not just for sex, it is a violent power struggle over a women. It must be frustration that his mother didn't care (or so he thinks) about him when he was growing up.

I think parents need to warn their children about it and tell them steps they can take to try and avoid it.
When I started to drink my Mum always told me to always get my own drink, never to leave it unattended, always watch peopleand to never accept drinks from strangers. She would also tell all my friends before we went out, to not slip drugs in my drinks, to not touch me whilst I was intoxicated ( unless I was that intoxicated that I needed help) and to look out for each other and protect each other from strangers.
My friends liked the fact that my Mum lectured them before we went out ( I dont think their parents talked to them about such things) and we always looked after each other, and we always managed to get out of bad situations. Because my Mum had warned us what to look out for.

Obviusly that is not going to stop it occuring, but as a parent you have to do all you can to educate your children to the dangers they will face.
