You have an HD Ready TV so that is one thing out of the way.

Yes there are channels being broadcast as HD at present, both on Sky and NTL/Telewest. You will need to subscribe to either Sky HD or Telewest's TVDrive service in order to obtain the hardware that is capable of processing HD.

The HDMI cable is simply a cable capable of sending the Video/Audio data from one HD device to another. Don't worry about it, it's a cable - just plug it in and forget about it.

Get your HD box, plug it into your tv with the HDMI cable and job's a good 'un.

OK first...I'm from the USA and I work/repair TV sets.

Second I believe Britain is about the same as the USA, so my knowledge should translate well....I hope.

Your Skybox is OUR Dish Network....you purchased a Low Definition Skybox for your Old TV and you can use it on your Hi DEF TV.... but you won't get HD on your box if it wasn't an HD box to begin with.....

HDMI will provide a signal to your TV set, but in the USA we have been having compatibility issues with Cable/Satellite HDMI. So the TV manufacturers are suggesting that we only connect using the HD-component connectors for reliability...It's still HD input, just processed by the satellite instead of the TV...NO DIFFERENCE at all except for that 6 foot cable connecting the TV and Sat box......

Now I'm pretty sure that Britain HAS HD SIGNALS....We've had them since 1998 in the Big Cities, and the small towns just got them in 2006.....

But your Skybox has to be designed to recieve HD signals....THAT's the IMPORTANT question that needs an ANSWER.

The box is the important part...is it a Low-Def box? Is it a Hi-Def Box? Did you pay the extra money for HD Stations? Or only paid for Low-Def (aka SD / Standard Definition) stations??

And what is this LICENSE for freeview about?
From what I understand it sounds like you pay for your Public Broadcasting Stations owned by the government.

Our PBS is paid by taxes...everybody pays for it, our National Broadcasters get paid by the Advertisers, our Local Broadcasters get paid by Local Advertisers
