We have carpeted stairs that are slowly being shredded by our boy cat Oliver. Any ideas on how we can stop him from this behavior?

First, give him something else to scratch. A scratching post will work if you make it attractive to him. You get shredded catnip and sprinkle it to attract him. Keeping his claws trimmed will also help. There is also declawing.

Our cat can go anywhere except in the area where we have leather lounge furniture. We bought an ultrasonic animal barrier - basically every time she entered the area of the lounges, a high pitched sound would go off and make her run off. The sound will go off when the cat (wearing a transmitter on her collar) went within a certain radius of the 'base' (this can be set for particular distances). After about 3 times, the cat would not cross the invisible line! For other areas in the house, you can just press the button on the base to emit the noise whenever the cat does something you don't want her to do. You only really have to catch her a couple of times because they learn quickly to stop whatever they are doing. This machine worked wonders for our household and worked instantly without hurting the cat in any way. Hope this helps!

1. Change the carpeting to something more durable.
2. Dont use carpeting
3. Keep the cat away from the stairs.

Please don't declaw your cat, it is sooo cruel. It is like having your nails ripped out. They sell this spray at pet shops called bitter apple and you spary it on the surface to keep your pet away from. Pets do not like it because it smells bad to them. My husband's brother uses it for his dog. It is supposed to be harmless to the pet and it works sometimes. Worth a try anyway.
