They tell you to keep it because its no use to them and not worth their while handling it but you don't have to accept the free gift, even if you keep the item. You can send it back or even throw it away.

Free gift? You mean you got 2 of the same thing only ones smaller? Usually the free gifts are diff or go along with the product, not the same thing. It may have their name on it for advertising.

The answer is simply economics. They don't want to have to pay for the return shipping. It is cheaper for the company if you keep it, and have to dispose of it. Getting rid of trash is a big problem these days and costly with a lot of electronic items.

When they tell you to keep the free gift, it's yours. You can do whatever you want with it. You can return it to the company, but you won't get any money back for it. You can throw it away if you want.

They are probably trying to use you as advertising. The company wants you to give it to someone who you know so that if it works for them, they will buy the real thing. I guess you could send it back but they would most likely just throw it away or send it to someone else. Instead, you should (depending on what it is) give it to a shelter or something. If it's shampoo or soap or something, the Girl Scouts would take it for their April Showers collection.

It's to leave you with a better sense of the experience with them.

it's probably something the company wanted to get rid of anyway.
