From Wikipedia:

"The chudder is a type of feline vocalization used by tigers and domestic cats as a greeting. It has been described as a throaty trill or chuckle; it is sometimes spelled as "mrrt" or "prrt"."

Okay, let's call it a 'chudder.' My cat 'chudders' when she enters the room, sometimes. Occasionally there's a notable 'brrrrp!' a moment before she's going to jump, from behind, onto the desk I'm sitting at, or there'll be a few little chirps while she's on her way over for a petting.

But, sometimes, it's just a quiet, brief announcement. "I'm in the same room as you." I say hello in return, and apparently that's all that's required.

She always comes over as well if she wants petting, so I'm at a loss to understand why she cares if I know she's nearby. I find it charming, and I'm thoroughly curious.

Re. "think they own us and our house all to themselves" -- you mean there are cats who do not think along those lines??

that's a sign that she truly loves you, bc she wants you to know she's in there. You're right, all she wants is for you to acknowledge her presence. it's like when u walk into a room occupied by someone you love. even if u've been around each other all day, it's nice if they say "hey" to you. my cats do the same to me. she does want you to pet her.

Yes....she's just saying hello. I think it's lovely.

We've got 4 cats who fight amongst themselves a lot and all of them think they own us and our house all to themselves. A stray in poor health adopted us for a while before he sadly passed away and whenever he came in to spend the night he always made this noise also. It was as if he was saying....ok, I'm here but I don't mean any harm. Our 4 cats never said a word to him, made way for him etc. as if they knew he wasn't well. So maybe it's part of language between cats as well.

My cat does the exact same thing as she jumps into my lap while I'm sitting at my computer desk.

I think it's cute, but I have no idea the biology or the communication behind it, other than playful affection.

Cats know over a 100 words,vocals.. she is saying hi to you, asking permission to enter...pat me please - etc...

My cat nick name (cody talk a lot) announces he is entering the room, that he has woken up, he is going to eat, he meows (sings) to his water before drinking... Meows at me and waits for my permission to come up on the bed... some cats talk a lot - some never talk - listen to the different tones your cat uses, and where he is st the time.. you will figure out what he is saying....

She's just being courteous, so as not to startle you. Similar to when someone comes in the house after going to the store. They know you probably heard them but they announce themselves to make you aware of their presence.

She does it for the same reason you would say hi to someone when you walked into the room. She's communicating.

She's just being polite and saying hello, as you would if you came into the room and somebody else was in there. As you probably do when she's in there.
