Consumer Reports is good as long as it is not one of the things they admit to faking at an independent lab.
Whatever your choice, if it is used, take it to a competent mechanic for a check. It's well worth the money you save on repairs.

First of all make sure it passed emissions. Emissions tells you a lot about the internal combustion system. If it has passed ,you know you have good compression, good fuel to air ratio, good valves, good rings, good pistons, no cracked block or head, engine is not skipping. With no trouble codes existing you know all your sensors are with in limits. The rest is up to you.You must listen for noises such as tapping, knocking, squealing, loud vibrations, humming.
The other most important part of your car is the transmission. A simple way to test your transmission is to check the fluid. It should not be dark or smell burnt. It should be a deep red color.
Start the car put it in nuetural put your foot on the brake and begin
to put it in drive, you should get a quick responce and solid engagement. Then continue the same proccess with the rest of the gears. You also must be sure your transmission has lock up. if it is not locking up you will eventually burn it up.
The best way to test lock up is to find a road with little trafic. Go about 40 to 45 miles an hour on a slight upgrade and hold steady
your speed, then very slightly touch the brake pedal pressing down
about three quarters of an inch. Listen very carfully for the speed of the engine raise up slightly then let go of the brake pedal and you should here the engine slow down.
Of coarse there is alot more to check out but these would be your two major components to check and don't forget leaks.

Well, the first thing to look at is what company you think is best. This is all completely up to you and depends on your personality and financial situation. Basicly what you should do is look at all the cars and companies, and figure out what company and model aims for what kind of person. You need to find a car that you feel comfortable in.

You may find the "right" car would be one that has a good rating from consumers. I suggest you buy a copy of a recent consumer reports magazine that includes new and or used autos or visit their website.
