English "people" are people from England. In my experience, only ethnically English people (ie their parents, grandparents and so on were also from England itself) call themselves English, while immigrants and the children/grandchildren of immigrants to England call themselves "British". Scottish people call themselves Scottish, and Welsh people call themselves Welsh. Also any of the above may call themselves "British" in some circumstances.
All of them speak the English "language" and so do Americans, Canadians, Australians, etc.

english has its origins in britain with the language called breton, a germanic language. americans speak a dialect of english, but the language of america is comprised of virtually every other language in the world.

Great Britain is made up of part of Ireland, England Scotland and Wales, and all have the right to call themselves British. Americans are from America. The real question is how can Americans change so much of the spelling of words and still call it English!

Because ENGLAND is part of Britain. It's an entirely seperate country from the USA and has nothing to do with the language.

OK, lemme tell you the difference. They drive on the wrong side of the road!? We drive on the right side of the road!?!?
They spell color as colour, flavor as flavour, center as centre and a lot of other things are differen, too!?!?
You don't hear them goin' ain'tcha and stuff like that!?!?
Besides they call pants - trousers, for cryin' out loud!?!?
These are two different languages, buddy!?!?

Americans wanted nothing to do with the British they were fleeing to America to get away from. They so hated being called British that they revolted.
