Okay maybe a silly question, but here goes. When leaving a message for a friend or family member on their answering machine. When they return my call, is it proper etiquette to wait for the person who returned my call to initiate the goodbye?

I don't think it really matters.

not if you are finished with the discussion- or you have some place/thing you need to do. you can initiate the goodbye, but make sure you have finished discussing the intention of the call. if you dont have time to chit chat, just let the person know you will call again soon to talk more, but that at the moment you time is limited do to prior responsibilities.

I would imagine that if there came a long pause at the end of a discussion point that was the main purpose of the phone call, it wouldn't really matter. Espically if you really do have to go do something else or things like that. Basically, I don't think it really matters much.

Don't worry your head with such little things! ; )

To the best of my knowledge, it does not matter who initiates the goodbye.

Pay no attention to men who don't call and go out with someone else instead. That'll teach him not to call, LOL.

It is always better for the caller to end the call. So callers should make sure that they don't make the calls too long.

I doubt it would cause a international incident either way.
