I have two female dogs that have been getting along perfectly for about 2 years. The American pit bull is 6 and the mutt is 2. One day, my brother dropped off his dog (male) and all three of them had no problems with each other for a few days. Then the two females started fighting each other almost every day, for no reason. Even when my brother took the male back to his house, the two females continued to fight. They fight to the point where I fear for their safety...I have separated them for now... What should I do???

Thats females for you. Play with all three. Don't ever show signs of favoritism.

Have they actually damaged each other? I think the visit from the male was just a trigger for something that was likely to happen. The Mutt is at the age where she is going to be testing the pack order.

One of the best things you can do is be an effective pack leader yourself. Have both females sit and wait for everything, food, treats, pets, etc. If one gets up or gives the evil eye to the other, you ignore the one misbehaving. Basically, you tell them bad manners will get no reward.

An excellent book for multi-dog households is: "Feeling Outnumbered? How to manage a multi dog household" by Dr. Patricia McConnell. That book has info that helped me with my 4 dogs, 2 Goldens, 1 Pitbull, 1 Pit/Akita mix.

The two girls where most likely just fighting over a boy like humans do. The male might have also been nagging the fight on my pestering them in any way. If the male doesnt come back anytime soon the females will most likely get over it soon. But when they do fight, stop them by saying *no* to both of the them or the one who starts it (im sure you know this, just saying). If the male comes back the females should be separted from the male until he leaves, but they might fight by just the smell of him.

I think it's a dominence thing. Dogs run in packs like wolves. There's a dominent male and a dominent female. They may not see you as the dominent female. If you got them as puppies they may not have considered it a pack unless a male came along. They may continue to fight for a while. Just keep them seperated but in places where they can still see each other. Allow them to get used to the way their pack is back to. Also consult an animal behaviorist.
