There is no reason to do that! The United States is Obligated to defend Japan as a result of a treaty signed after Japan's surrender to the U.S.
We'd essentially be nuking ourselves!

Nuking anybody would be a really really bad idea. We may have really powerful weapons, but if we ever use them on anyone the rest of the world will blow the U.S. off the face of the planet. The same goes for any other country. Also, many countries now have nuclear weapons, it's not just the U.S. like it at the end of WWII.
