Animals (and other organisms) become extinct for a lot of reasons, but it really comes down to one main one... the inability to adapt to their environment.
As long as an organism is able to survive through adaptation (structural or behavioural), it should be able to pass on those genes to the next generation. If a species dies before being able to pass on thier genes, then it becomes extinct.
Some reasons that would affect an organisms chance of survival are:
predation, lack of resources, competition for resources, low population, pollution, sudden environmental changes, low birthrate

The continual expansion of human kind, we no longer live in harmony with our world. We think that we can control all and have forgotten that we are a part of the whole, like a game of Jenga, you remove so many blocks and the whole thing comes tumbling down when you least expect it.

The reduction of their living habitat, destruction of their feeding sources, human hunting of the species, climate change which, again, takes away the environment in which they can sustain themselves. In addition to direct impact, stressed animals cannot reproduce to sustain their species.
