Doctor has already died, so treat the patient

2007-01-20 20:34:53 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 1 0

hahaha id say it depends on how well liked the doctor was in that particular hospital, but asuming the availability of sufficient medical personel, one doctor would work on the patient and everyone else would work on the doctor, hahaah they always take care of thier own.everyone does. if your father was having a heart attack infront of you and six others were doing the same right next to him, who would you try to help. how about your best friend or someone you didnt know? those are answers you can give yourself that would lead you to this answer, plus the docotrs could reason if the doctor dies, many patients will die, while this patient represents only one life, but the hospital may have a protocal that dictates helping the patient first if there is only one available doctor.

Legally, the other staff in the room would be responsible for their patient, the one being operated on. If they were to change focus to the doctor and something were to happen to the patient they could be charged with abandonment and possibly negligence. However, if the patient was stable they would undoubtedly try to help the doctor, remove him from the OR, and call a code team to come help him.

As far as sterility goes, the doctor's death doesn't change the sterility of the theater so long as he is removed prior to his care (as opposed to others entering to take care of him). He already scrubbed in to enter the room; his death wouldn't suddenly create new germs.

If the doctor died, there would be nothing left to work on, however, the other doctors and nurses would split and some would work on both until other doectos could be called in to work on the doctor.

The doctors would not work on the dead doctor, a medical examiner would. The doctors will also have to be scrubbed again and switch to a different operating room since it was no longer sterile.
