Professionals often work still with film, not digital, because a film of 400 ISO has a resolution of about 19 megapixels, one of 200 ISO even 26 megapixels. The best digital cameras are around 12 megapixels.
The advantage of digital photography: you can change the image afterwards on the computer.
I work with analog and digital cameras, and I would say it is best to have an analog and a digital SLR camera and lenses, that go for both. As far as I know only Nikon and Canon have that.

Despite all the advertising and marketing ploys to make you believe that photography is all about technology, its not. Photography is not about the equipment.

Photography is about light.
Photography is about the eye behind the lens.
Photography is about the subject.

A great photographer can take a great photograph with just about anything. Some high end photographers make a very successful career from large format pinhole cameras they build themselves from cardboard! No kidding.

I own several cameras -

- digital SLR's
- film SLR's
- film range finders
- digital point and shooters
- film point and shooters

My fav is my Argus range finder; a camera that is probably over 50 years old and was picked up at a flea marker for $10 complete with leather cases, bulb flash and 3 lenses. It still takes great shots and because it has no need for batteries, works great as an outdoor winter camera.

What I'm trying to tell you is that $50,000 worth of equipment doesn't make a great photographer. I've seen many bad wedding photos to prove that. Academy Award winning films have been shot on cheap camcorders and edited on a PC using $100 software. There are many out there who would argue that. To them and to you I say:

"Its not about the technology...
... its all about you!"

Traditionally the Canon 20D and the Nikon D200 have been the favorite workhorses. Nowadays there is more choice.

From Canon: the 30D seems to be the darling.
From Nikon the D200 is still a favorite with the new lower priced D80 hot on its heels.

To save money entry level cameras are:
Canon: 400D
Nikon: D50 D40.

My personal choice was the Nikon D50 then I bought a D80. I love them both.

Teef has suggested some excellent cameras, and Stephen has hit the nail on the head. Your best investment will be a good book on beginning photography, and "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. Learn about camera settings and how they affect your photo, learn about lighting and composition. Then read your camera manual and practice.

Have fun & good luck!

any digital canon or nikon SLR (single lense reflex) is an awesome choice. nikon N65 or N80 are good film starters, or F100 for more advanced film photography.
hold out on getting a medium format camera until you are very advanced in your skills, confident in your abilities, and have the resources and ability to develop the negatives yourself.
digital SLRs are more expensive up front, but will pay for themselves with the money you save on buying and developing film.
