It is only developed nations that clear and harvest forests and mine all their natural resources. Developed nations also have way more industry therefore generate more greenhouse gases thereby causing the most environmental damage.
Many third world countries are also suffering environmentally with mines and over foresting, but it is the developed countries that are benefiting from this as they buy all the raw product, or are the ones who actually own the offshore mines, etc.
Therefore, it is imperative that these developed nations compensate the third world as the whole planet will benefit from it.

Of course they should, since they are the ones who caused most of the pollution that is now driving climate change. The developed world went through the Industrial Revolution 200 years ago, and have only increased their reliance on fossil fuels since.

To give you an idea, according to a World Wildlife Fund report in 2000, which measures natural resource use in hectares per person, the United states consumes something like 9.6 hectares of natural resources per person and Europe just under 7, while the whole of Africa only consumes 1.8 hectares per person. Consumption of resources equates directly to Pollution so there's clear responsibility. It's likely that the figures have changed somewhat since then, but not by a lot.
