Dogs have certain triggers that instinct makes them react to. One of those is Small Creatures Running Away. Most breeds of dog, and some even more strongly than others, feel a powerful urge to chase something if it runs away from them.
If a dog and a cat are getting along just fine, even for a very long time, and then one day for whatever reason the cat suddenly bolts and runs, the dog is likely to chase it. If the cat doesn't find a place to hide...
I really doubt it was a matter of dangerous aggression, or jealousy. It was something that just naturally happens sometimes between a predatory animal and a smaller animal, no matter how tame and friendly they are. It's a risk petowners take.
I'm sorry that happened. :(

It depends on your breed of dog but you have to be careful because
if that dog bails up a tom cat that has not been desexed then the fight will be much more even.It is not all a one way fight.
Jealousy could be a reason but I would get that dog to some obedience school or consult a vet.The next time the dog might run into a proverbial Garfield.I owned a cat once that jumped on the back of a dog and dug its claws in.

Dogs think that they are human, just like you. They often see other animals as toys or something to chase. Dogs tear up their toys all the time. They have instinctive behavior when it comes to this.
But, if they have been acclimated to cats, they will see them as human as well and not try to kill them. Some dogs are ill-behaved because they have never been properly trained. They often take on the personality of their master.

I used to have 2 dogs and 3 cats. There have never been problems with that, they were playing together...
But one time, one of the dog killed one of the cat, simply because the cat touched him while he was eating, one move, one bite and the cat was done.
It never happened again but there's still a risk.

Same reason they will kill humans, its in their nature no matter how adorable they may seem. so you must be an irresponsible owner because its never the animals fault right? And your dog never indicated it in any way did it? People seem to think its only viscious maltreated animals that can do this but its any animal. This is part of their nature to fight amongst each other for superiority etc and sometimes that means to the death. Human beings kill each other all the time then we expect some dumb animal to be a saint? go figure

you're actually splendid. canine have a for sure severe prey force, and Staffys have an exceedingly great prey force through what they have been bred for interior the previous AND the fact they're seen "terriers". That undesirable canine. That undesirable cat. Neither grow to be truly interior the incorrect -- what a stupid family members to place a Staffy with 2 cats (and a smaller canine). Had they completed slightly study and had slightly trouble-free experience, this could have been prevented. yet to be truthful, this family members sounds stupid on a number of diverse ranges. i could like to furnish them a sturdy slap. upload: @UHave2Be - I comprehend your prejudice in direction of this team of canine and that's in some situations properly-based, yet no longer in this occasion. whilst i grow to be youthful, we had 2 tough Collies, in fact, that have been youthful and enjoying interior the backyard - a stray cat undergone and as a sport they finally performed with that cat till it grow to be lifeless. Fenced backyard; we've been indoors on the time. for sure they did no longer intend for the cat to die, or maybe they did - yet ANY canine is able to killing yet another animal.
