Many learned disciplines were first occult practices or portions of religion before they became sciences.
Some others are alchemy/chemistry, astrology/astronomy, accupuncture, ayurvedic medicinal practices(currently hitting medicine), mathematics/newtonian physics, masonry/stonework, aggriculture/eleusinian mysteries, etc.
Really the list is quite extensive and encompases so much that we just take for granted.

no. An occult practice is anything that you believe will change your fate in life. Like if you believe in a rabbit's foot or a chain letter. Those are example. Hypnosis is just a psychological restatement of one's thoughts.

No, not really. People can be easily influenced to suggestion for either entertainment or medicinal purposes. It's actually quite useful. Just look at the authors of the bible...

Occult is a blanket term people use for things they don't understand. All that means is that people treated hypnotism superstitiously because it was so mysterious to them.

Hypnosis is giving up control to an outside force. Anytime you relinquish control there are forces waiting to step in.

actually the occult practice was mesmerism, which is an earlier form of hypnotism, but hypnotism, when done properly, is completely different
