Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or mutiple personality disorder is a severe condition in which two or more distinct identities, or personality states, are present in -- and alternately take control of -- an individual.

The person also experiences memory loss that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness. The disturbance is not due to the direct psychological effects of a substance or of a general medical condition, yet as this once-rare disorder has become more common, the diagnosis has become controversial.

Man has the power to mask his feelings and his thoughts

There are times when you may have wanted to kill a person but could not just because the law stops you from doing that

Or there could be a time when you want to express your feelings for a person but are too timid or impractical to do that

In such a situation..you tend to curb your feelings and thoughts which are sent to the subconscious by the brain

These feelings and thoughts are not deleted from your memory but they lie dormant waiting to spring back
Now when the amount of such thoughts becomes too much for the brain to handle..they expose themselves and the person becomes a completely different person

Like....even a non-violent person may become a violent person if his violent feelings show up

In such a situation...multiple personalities are said to inhabit the same person and they are in a disorderly manner
Hence the name "Multiple Personality Disorder"

This could even happen when a person wants to become someone and could not..then his mind makes him that person without his knowing it

Got it?

The existence in an individual of two or more distinct identities or personalities, each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment. At least two of these personalities are considered to routinely take control of the individual's behavior, and there is also some associated memory loss, which is beyond normal forgetfulness. This memory loss is often referred to as "losing time". These symptoms must occur independently of substance abuse, or a general medical condition.
