When the sources of petrol will be exausted, humankind will find other means for its replacement.

Consider a simple matter:During WWII, Germany had practically no resources of oil. They did not lose the war for lack of petrol, they lost for strategical reasons.

Germany produced oil by the Fischer-Tropf process that consisted in the hydrogenation of coal. More recently South Africa during the sanction caused by apartheid, produced oil with the same process.

It is estimated that the presently known sources of coal will last
for at least 500 yesrs !!!

The most stupid way of using oil is to burn it. But actually it is still too cheap for starting serious searches of alternative energy.

Oil gets more and more expensive.

People start using something else.

The interesting question for the US is will the process ruin our economy and make us all poor.

Based on how we are ignoring that it must happen one day, and are not doing nearly enough to figure out what the something else will be and how we will make it work, that's a very real possibility.

No one knows when petroleum will run out. But, as it becomes more scarce, it will become more expensive. Eventually it will reach a point where alternative fuels will become economic and they will then begin to replace petroleum. It is not that we don't have alternatives now, it is just that they are more expensive.
