Where did the last name start, and how come there are some many know how did new ones start?

just too many folks with the same first name.. so when the blacksmith had a kid, he may be named "dave smith". or a medieval dude named john has a kid known as "john's son" johnson, get it?

They told of your trade..
Smith = Blacksmith...Cook...Taylor...Wheeler...
Or they would identify your clan...Burke...Murphy....Mac Donnall...Mac Intire...
