White has long been accepted as the traditional color of the wedding dress, but wedding gowns were not always white. The marriage of Queen Victoria to her cousin Albert of Saxe- Coburg in 1840 has had more influence on weddings than any other. Queen Victoria put the wheels in motion by marrying in white. Though brides continued to wed in gowns of different colors, white was now set as the color of choice for weddings and has continued ever since. In Godey’s Lady’s Book, 1849, this statement was printed: “ Custom has decided, from the earliest ages, that white is the most fitting hue, whatever may be the material. It is an emblem of the purity and innocence of girlhood, and the unsullied heart she now yields to the chosen one.”
There is an old poem about how the color of your wedding dress will influence your future: “Married in white, you will have chosen all right. Married in grey , you will go far away. Married in black, you will wish yourself back. Married in red, you’ll wish yourself dead. Married in blue, you will always be true. Married in pearl, you’ll live in a whirl. Married in green, ashamed to be seen, Married in yellow, ashamed of the fellow. Married in brown, you’ll live out of town. Married in pink, your spirits will sink.”

white is fine for a dress if you are not a virgin, it is the veil you cannot wear.
The question should be, why do men wear black?
Aside from that, in the orient, red is the color of passion and the color worn as the wedding dress. I'm not sure what the Indian tradition is, but I don't think it's white. It's gold or some rich color. Same in Greece and Ukraine and German traditions. You just wear your best dress (no matter what the color) and pile on your dowry, which is usually at least a coin-necklace.

White.....the reflection (rejection) of ALL wavelengths of visible light as pure........Black, the absorption (acceptance) of all visible light as negative. The analogy makes sense.
I think you are getting hung up on black and white.
I am NOT white, I am a pale creame......kind of peach but more creame. I have never met a black person..........I have been friends with a very dark brown person.
It is the terms we use to describe individuals that gets confused with the same terminology we use to describe good and bad (pure and tainted).
Black and white do the same injustice to the description of a person as red does for American Indians or yellow does for an Asian person. The description is an impression of the person, having nothing to do with the actual color in question.

In some cases it is nowadays, yes.
But it could also stand for spiritual purity, or the bride's commitment to a new, pure life.
The question I've always pondered is if white is purity why does the groom wear black?

Oprah had a balck and white party once, and she wore a Red Gown to it. So i guess its your perogative. HOwever i think if you wanted to stay with the theme you should do something outrageous wear a gown instead of jsut a dress or just something outrageous to that effect and then color up your makeup or wear a crazy colored wig to stand out. Theres alot you can do its your brithday go crazy
