negative experiences with, or opinions of, hslda.org?

Prof: no, I see that site linked here often, but that has nothing to do with home schooling kids. It's about online college degrees.
I'm looking for people's experiences with the organization Home School Legal Defense Association.

Here is some negative information about HSLDA. I have had no experience with them, but after reading some of their exploits online, including shady deals to get rid of competition, and the way they put homeschooling on the back burner to advocate for other conservative christian ideologies, I've decided I could do without association. I will say that their website does contain a good number of articles about homeschooling, as well as legal requirements for every state. www.HNELD.com is an alternative to HSLDA

They provide no service that any person could do for themselves, especially in light of homeschooling being perfectly legal. In addition, they are very particular about what they will and won't cover. If someone is happy there, spending $115 for 'insurance', so to speak (although they are very careful to say it's not insurance, and very few families ever need their services) They are great about scaremongering, hyping up the few cases that have occurred, and also sending out messages about how congress is going to restrict homeschooling.

The latest one I got through my local group was about how homeschooling was 'under attack'. It was a bill that requires grass root lobbies who pay people to lobby for them, and spend more than $10,000 to lobby, it requires them to share their financial information with the public. They don't want that because they spend a lot more than that lobbying, and not for homeschooling either. Has nothing to do with homeschooling, it's all about lobbying. That tells you where their priorities are.

The HSLDA website is www.hslda.org.

This is a legal association, helping you to protect your rights to homeschool. You become a member, and they represent you in case of arbitration. They have some literature on their website concernin g homeschool or family management and government. You don't have to be a member to purchase these. If you are a member there are also lots of forms and downloadable legal information for you.

I homeschooled 2 daughters 4th grade- graduation and they have assisted me in the proper filing and reporting of my homeschool to my district. They also explained the law to me, send me the corresponding laws by mail, so that I can choose my reason and back it up with the correct reference.

Beyond that, it is simply like your car insurance. You pay a membership fee once a year, and you can ignor it is there. But if anything happens, they will have a special lawyer fight your case in court if necessary!

Use them like you would any other insurance. For peace of mind.
Maybe laws are less strict now, maybe you are in a district that has lots of experience with homeschoolers and is homeschool freindly, you may not want HSLDA.

I felt it a good investment, as they also use some of the funds to do worthy things, all in support of our rights.
