i'm typing it step by step so i dont get confused lol

1. fill up the 9 L container
2. pour the water from the 9L into the (empty)4L container
3. now he has 5L of water in the 9L container
4. empty the 4L container
5. pour whats in the 9L container into the 4L container again
6. now he has 1L in the 9L container
7. empty the 4L container again
8. pour the 1L that remains in the 9L container, into the empty 4L container.
9. now he has 1L in the 4L container (and nothing in the 9L container)
10. fill the 9L container up again
11. fill up the rest of the 4L container (which needs 3 more liters) from whats in the full 9L container
12. which means 6 Liters should be left in the 9L container (9L-3L)

and after all that, the boy better get a raise!

Fill the 4l container 3 times emptying each fill up into the 9l.
The 3rd time it wont fit and will leave the 4l container at 3l. Mark the container. Dump out the 9l put in the 3l out of 4l container fill to line and add to 9l for 6l total.
or
put the 9l container under the tap and go outside and turn off the water supply. Go back in and open the tap go back out and turn supply line back on watching the meter. Stop at 6l

Fill the 9l with the 4l bucket 3 times.

The 9l is full the 4l has 2l.

Then empty the 9l pour the 2l from the 4l then refill the 4l & add to the 9l.. Presto 6l in the 9l bucket.

fill the 9. Pour the 9 into the 4. Dump the 4. Pour the 5 in the 9 into the 4 leaving 1 in the 9. Note where the level of water is in the 9 with 1. Dump the 4. Put the 1 from the 9 into the 4. Fill the 9 back to line of 1 and put the 1 from the 4 into the 9 making 2 in the 9. Fill the 4 and dump it into the 9 making 6.

Simple use the 4l bucket to measure the water. 1 and 1/2 buckets makes 6l. just pour into the 9l one.
