Buy him a necklace like a St. Christopher's medal or a cross or crucifix. A pocket angel is always nice. Or give him a picture that he can keep in his wallet of you so when he is having his molly moments he can take it out and feel comfort. Make sure to keep the letters, e mails and care packages going to him. They need that. Mail him cards too or make him cards they really enjoy it. May God bless your soldier. Make sure you send him all your LOVE.

Practical: a Gerber or Leatherman tool
Sentimental: a photo of you/your kids
Motivational: a small American Flag
Tactical: a good, durable pair of tactical gloves (Hellstorm, etc.)
Inspirational: Nothing. Just knowing you support him will keep him inspired. Always let him know. Always.

I bought my husband a mitzpah when he was in Iraq and he loved it.We both wore it every day he was deployed but he wound up losing his waiting for his flight out of Kuwait to come home.I'm not sure what branch your hubby is in,but this link is for a marine one so you can get the idea. Try your exchange to find whatever branch you need

I gave my husband a dog tag that said " no matter where you are we will always love you" and onthe back it had mine and our kids' nicknames. He never takes it off. And on the practical side his dad gave him a new knife and I gave him a vest that yousoak in water and it stays cool for a few days. (he said that was a huge help)

A pocket pussy. It is small, you can bring it, and he will use it.
