someone attempted to insult me by saying "welcome to america, we speak AMERICAN" - but American isn't really a language - it's just an adapted form of English - or am i wrong?

Is American a language such as Italian, or Russian, or Polish - or is it a variation of English?

American is not a language at all. The majority of the people in America speak English but it is not the national language. I think that it may become the national language soon depending on the decision of the government. Many other languages are spoken in America, like Spanish and Chinese and not everyone here speaks English because it is not a requirement. Its why America was always referred to as the "melting pot" because it is inhabited by people of many different cultures and nationalities as well as languages so the next time someone tells you "We speak American in America," tell them to shove it and get educated.

I hope this helped.

The English language is comprised of many words from other languages such as French, German, Spanish, etc., but mainly of Latin. The English language is a language, but not formed entirely of itself. The American language is English with other words that were coined here. In Webster's dictionary, if you see a star before the word, that means that particular word was coined in the US.
To recap: American is NOT a language, and English is a whole bunch of languages bunched together.

The person who insulted you is a paragon of idiocy. English is a language shared by a large portion of the world. It is spoken in the UK, Canada, America, South Africa, Australia, and Guyana (to name a few). People from Great Britain will tell you that they are the only ones who truely speak English and everyone else has just garbled it into a horrible mess of a language, so your racist friend better never plan on any trips to GB or those turned tables will crush him.
