Is this a common problem amoung felines? Is there a usual cause? Should I take him to the vet? We thought it was humorous at first but it has lasted like a year now. Bad mom I know. I think he's allergic to cats!

Hi there,

Sneezing in cats is probably as common as sneezing in humans.

There are so many different reasons that could be causing your kitty to sneeze. It could be viral; such as cat flu, which need vet treatment or it could be due to environmental causes; such as dust.

Talk to your vet about it, but I would not worry about sneezing in itself unless it is accompanied by discharge from the eyes or nose, or if the cat was wheezy or having difficulty breathing.

Best wishes,
Heidi

I had a cat, named Sneezy lol, and he sneezed a lot mostly after eating. Got him from the pound, and took him to the vet, and ended up poor kitty had a hole in the roof of his mouth about the size of a sharpened pencil tip-like it was jabbed in there. Vet figured he probably got stuck or something on a cage/wire, and was chewing his way out and it poked through. Tried 2 surgeries on him, neither worked though, wasn't enough skin to pull over. Yours could be allergies, or maybe has some kind of infection. Probably best to see a vet about it.

It does sound like an allergy. Take him to the vets, they will diagnose it for sure. He could also have a respiratory problem or allergy related asthma. One of my cats sneezes constantly and she has allergies. Her medicines don't always work when the allergy cause is high, like pollen. The vet can give shots, use oral medicines or recommend an over the counter one like Benedryl. I've heard of a cat being allergic to another animals dander.

Two of my parents cats sneeze like crazy once in awhile. The vet told us the cats had allergies. If you want you can take the cat to the vet and ask what to do or what it is allergic too. I believe they can run some tests.

Sounds like your cat has allergies. take him to the vet. The vet can tell you if it is. You can give him benadryl but you will need to find out the correct dosage from your vet (as it will vary with the weight of your cat)

a year? You should have done this sooner..but the important thing is you are doing it now. Don't beat yourself up over it.

In my opinion, I think your cat has an allergy to something in your house or maybe even a pollen from outside. I suggest that you just call the vet first before you go up to the vet. Good luck and God Bless.

Watch what products you use around the house... polish, carpet & floor cleaners, sprays ,hair spray, even plug in air fresheners...a cats nose is far more sensitive than humans and all the above products end up at his/her level. A vet visit wont do any harm! >^..^<

I have a rescue cat called TJ who was abandoned at the vets after the owner found she had cat flu...didnt want the bill. She is now prone to 'flu' like symtoms yearly and sneezing and snottering is common( yuk!)

My siamese,Charlie, sneezes all the time. We adopted him 4 months ago and he had a bad upper respiratory infection (causing him to sneeze out thick green/yellow stuff). We treated him with antibiotics but now, even 4 months after the infection he sneezes all the time, but it is clear and thin/watery mucus. We smoke in the house and I'm blaming it on that. As a (human) nurse I'm not worring about it since we only treat yellow, green, or thick mucus discharge (with a temperature/fever) in humans.
Charlie's appetite is great and he is loving and playful, he just sprays us with his sneezes from time to time, so I think it is just an allergy, probably to smoke.....and maybe my dusty house.
Hope this helps allieviates your "bad Mom" fears.

Ummm... my 3 month old kitten had the same problem awhile ago, when I first got her. I think maybe it just takes some time for them to get used to their new environment and at first there might be some allergy issues. Have you been using air freshener, perfume or anything that may be triggering his allergies?

larger respiration an infection. She desires antibiotics from the vet to clean it up. that's totally contagious among cats so manage any others you have have been given besides. hint: have the vet teach you to grant her the meds. it is not as hassle-free because it seems!
