Aside from the obvious moral circumstances, religion offers people a sense of higher purpose and that even if they are not a super start in this life time, they can be assured they will prevail in the next if they do what God wants them to.
Religion can be a template for people to act in a good manner. It also can be a sense of appreciation for life and the good it has to offer. A sense that there is always some untouchable, unmovable, unbreakable relentlessly loving existence that is there to help people.
People have different reasons for believing in God, but one way or another the majority of the population chooses to believe that there is a supernatural power that is there to have expectations, show mercy, and ultimately reward or punish people for what they have done in their lives,

I have been a "born again Christian" for almost 22 years now. Before I came to Jesus Christ, I had "religion". I knew "about" God and Jesus but didn't know Him personally.
Coming to know Jesus Christ by asking Him into your heart is not about religion. It's about an ongoing, ever expanding, ever enlightening, ever growing RELATIONSHIP with Him. See the difference. Religion is basically nothing more than a list of rules that people follow trying to make themselves "good" enough to please the god they serve. Christianity is saying I can't be good enough-Jesus you kept the rules for me, I receive your sacrifice on my behalf. See the difference?
Read Ephesians 2:1-10.

Because the world feels like an easier place to live in if there is a Sky Daddy who has a plan for you and you get to live in Super Happy Funland when you die.
I know the world would feel like a more special place to me if Johnny Depp acknowledged the killer crush he has on me. Religion is pretend like that, only ramped up.

Mostly we follow the religion of our parents we learn about how they are performing religious duties and we follow suit. All parents want their children to develop a reliable sense of integrity, and for them to be compassionate members of society and family.
They want their children to keep open to their own inner knowing, their own innate sense of spirituality, of connectedness. They want them to learn to trust themselves, the environment they bring them into, and ultimately to take responsibility to make their world more trustworthy. They want them to grow up knowing that it matters that they are alive; that they make a difference.
Children need structure and feedback to develop these values. And the structure needs to be consistent with the way their role models live their lives. Parents need to model for them respect for self and others, tolerance for others' views, and the importance of using their minds and hearts to determine. The religion provides a way of thinking to the children. Its there to give them direction, to familiarize them with a value system and let them have an objective way to life.
Especially for Muslims and Christians religion is there to tell that there is more to life than the life we live in. Beyond the usual life we live everyday there is this life after death that we must think about. So we need religion to get an objective in life. To have a drive to work. To have an inspiration in life, a value system, an attitude to be accountable of and responsible for what we do.
Without having a religion our life would just be too unclear, defocused and without an objective. We would just be lost souls…and think again life is different for different people, its unfair for poor and fair for rich, what brings a hope of a better tomorrow…religion.

Human beings are created to know God. He instilled in us a thirst that will not be satisfied until we reach out to Him for companionship and love. Paul wrote in Philippians 3:8 (NAS), "More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ."
We were created to have an intimate, loving relationship with the Lord? and to bring Him glory. Paying respect with our gifts and good works is a natural extension of that design. But our primary responsibility is to spend time with Him.

People need Jesus Christ in their lives. They need to accept
Him as their Lord and Savior. Millions of people have a religion
but much fewer have Christ in their hearts. There's a big
difference.
