My dog got a hold of our can of fish flakes. She ate probably any were from 3/8 to 1/3 of the can. She was very vicious about us taking it away from her. She must have really liked him.

Can this be harmful for her? Should I expert her to throw up? Are there any serious side effects?

Thanks in Advance.

P.S. I will choose a best answer probably tomorrow!

No she should be fine this once. This is not something you will want her to do all the time (obviously). My dog ate a jar of fish flakes once as well. She might throw up, but it anything she will probably have a little diarrhea. If she gets diarrhea just take her food from her for 24 hours to allow her stomach to calm down a little. (DO NOT TAKE HER WATER!!) She will be fine, don't worry.

P.S. My dog got vicious when she got in to fish flakes as well....NOT LIKE HER SHE IS A CALM NICE DOG! (i am NOT saying your dog is not nice i am sure she is!) they must be real good! (strange....lol)

Hi JC,

I wouldn't worry about your dog eating the fish flakes. To put you mind at ease, check out the ingredients on the side of the can. You'll most likely find it's made of fish meal and maybe some sort of bulk adding ingredient. I doubt very, very much that there would be something in commercially prepared fish food that would affect a dog.

Most ingredient lists read like this:
Crude Protein (Minimum) 45%
Crude Fat (Minimum) 6%
Crude Fiber (Maximum) 9%
Moisture (Maximum) 8%

I wouldn't expect for you to see any outwards signs from your dog, like vomiting, diarrhea or sickness. If you're worried, contact a vet though.

The worst that's going to happen is that your doggie might get a bit thirsty! Nothing a fresh bowl of water won't fix.

Best wishes,
Heidi.

Your dog will be fine. The only thing that might happen is a little loose stools tonight or tomorrow.

I raised a couple of litters on a fish based diet, and they were in excellent health. Solid Gold dog food has a fish based diet, as fish is an excellent source of protien and omega 3 fatty acids for dogs (and humans)
However, if your dog is small, and not used to fish, she may suffer a couple of loose stools, with no harm done.

She'll be fine, may give her diarrhea though, so keep an eye out. I've lost several cans of fish food, all the more expensive ones of course, sprialina flakes, shrimp pellets, goldfish food, big brand new can of tropical flakes-totally gone. And they were up fairly high, he's just a big putz...When we were kids, I dared my little brother to eat some, and the idiot did lol. He got sick and threw up all night though...

I really don't think fish food could hurt a dog unless your dog is a little Yorkie or a small dog, then it would upset her stomach. But, I really don't think it will or did hurt her. But just keep an eye on her if she starts acting funny then take her to the vet or even just call there. Good luck.

The food is just a bunch of dried fish and some fillers. It is all safe. Your dog may have fish breath for a while though. :)

OK tomorrow check your dog, if it is alive and well then the fish food was OK. If otherwise, then the dog should not have eaten the fish flakes.
