I've been thinking of getting a spiral perm but I am scared to mess my hair up in the process. Its alittle past my elbows and not real thick. It has alot of split ends right now. What are some advantages and disadvantages to perms?

The main disadvantage is that it is permanenet. If you decide you hate it there is little you can do besides chemically straighten it. On the plus side, perms are back! Curls, waves, body...you can get whatever look you want. My advice is to make sure a good stylist is doing it for you (one with experience) and before you get the perm, use Joico kpak reconstructor (you can get it for a good price at http://www.spiralhaircase.com.) Use the reconstructor every day for a week before the perm and once a week afterwards. If you are thinking of doing any coloring, then make sure the perm comes first rather than after the color. Good luck!

I've had several excellent perms.
And I've had several horrible perms.
Right now, I'm happy with layers and highlighting. My hair is stick straight. I just use Paves Styling mousse and a curling iron for some lift and shape. I'm happier this way bc the perming process is SO unpredictable and there is too much room for error. Growing out after a horrible perm is just a waste of about 6 to 9 months of your life.

If you are unsure at all do not do it. You can get the same effects on a temporary basis if you just want to try it out to see if you like the look without permanently altering your hair and then having to live with it until it grows out. Also if your hair already had damage then the possibility of severely damaging your hair during the perming process are much greater. If getting this perm is something you decide to do I would definitely work on making sure your hair is as healthy as possible before doing so to minimize the damage. Remember the name itself is "permanent", so if a temporary change is what you are looking for then don't do this until you are sure long term change is what you want. I would first try temporary methods of the look to be sure you can live with the look you get. Hope his helps.

There are different types of perms.
I've only had Japanese perms.
It's got a more natural feel to it & lasts only for 3 months.
The process also uses less chemicals that tend to damage & dry your hair with normal perms.
Normal perms can leave your hair looking frizzy and dry if your hair can't stand the chemicals.
If you're really paranoid, you don't have to perm your whole head of hair.
You can opt for a more natural look by perming the ends of your hair, so you achieve a more natural wavy look (compared to the tight curly look).
...just an idea.

Before you get the perm I would trim the ends at least 1" and deep condition it for 2 wks prior to perming. Perms can dry out your hair but as long as you keep it conditioned you should be fine.
With a perm you don't have to curl it unless you want to.

DONT!
Seriously chemical treatment for hair that is already weak is the worst thing you can do!
If you want healthier hair then get a hot oil treatment. It works WONDERS with split ends and dull hair, not to mention dandruff.
Use conditioners after each hair wash concentrating on your ends. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse out. It'll reduce frizz, make your shinier and smooth away those unruly split ends.
Also, if you want your hair to look fuller get a haircut with lots of layers.

A spiral perm will only make your hair look frizzy and untidy.

Perms dry your hair out. So, if your hair is normally oily, you could go longer between washings. If you have a perm you would probably want to air dry not blow dry.

It's not recommended to perm hair that is already chemically altered (colored, tinted).

You probably should get a hair cut first to trim off the split ends before perming your hair.

Spiral perms are beautiful....but should you get one....make sure not to get the small rods....have then use the larger rods....or if you aren't sure and just need a change, get your hair cut in long layers and about 2 inches off the length, that should take care of the split ends and the long layers should make your hair seem a little thicker.

Perms are awful for your hair. It's like cooking your hair with chemicals. Especially if you already have split ends. You will probably have to cut those off first.

It will give your hair volume, however you have to be careful as it might be expensive and drop out and then it would be a waste. Good Luck. (ps. I have always wanted to do the same, however a perm just wouldn't hold in my hair type)
